• Holiday homes for those with limited mobility
• It is possible for those with limited mobility to own their own holiday home in France. Holiday Homes (also known as mobile homes) have over the years become far more sophisticated and luxurious than their caravan predecessors. They boast mains water, waste disposal units, electricity and bottled gas systems for cooking and hot water. Some even have gas central heating systems. Caravans have become a real alternative to buying a property in France.
• Campsites and parks offer an easy lifestyle catering for people of all ages and needs. Many offer a full complement of facilities within their own private grounds allied with the security and comfort associated with such sites.
• One particular site I recommend is Domaine du Logis, Near Combourg. It is within easy reach of St Malo, just 35 minutes drive from the port. Set in the grounds of a Château the site is full of charm and character. More importantly it is completely on one level and has tarmac roads leading up to its pitches. Getting around on site in a wheelchair is easy with good access to the bar/restaurant and other onsite facilities. There are lights along the road for guidance at night. The managers live onsite, speak very good English and will be available at all times for advice and assistance. The two local towns of St Domineuc and Combourg are just minutes away by car, where you will find supermarkets, bars and restaurants.
• The centre of Combourg has recently been enhanced and now provides a large pedestrian area and street cafés/bars have now spilled over into this area. The Monday Market is always popular.
• A visit to Beaulieu Caravan Show last year left a lasting impression on me (as one who has an elderly parent of very limited mobility). As a dealer for most major UK manufacturers it was an ideal opportunity to have a look at new models and meet with the suppliers. It was whilst looking into the homes on display that I discovered the ‘Harmony’ & ‘Sovereign’. Both homes are built by Pemberton Leisure Homes Ltd, Wigan, Lancashire and meet the Grade A/ 1 standard of requirements for the disabled.
• Both homes offer stylish yet uncluttered accommodation, to maximise on space, with wide sliding doors, especially designed kitchens with low level units and a highly specified shower room featuring a level entry recessed tray, fold out seat and support rails. Even the flooring is hardwearing and suitable for wheelchairs.
• The Pemberton Sovereign has moveable twin beds in the main bedroom with moveable trapeze lift handles.
• So, limited mobility is no longer a barrier to being able to enjoy the outdoor life within the comfort and security of well regulated and well run campsites in your favourite location.
